Mia was thrilled to participate in the 3rd grade speech tournament this year. She enjoyed all the practices with her speech teacher and couldn't wait to perform at the tournament. She had practiced the cutest "True Story of the Three Little Pigs" for the story telling category. Performing is right up Mia's alley so she had everything well memorized, actions to go along with it, and made the whole story exciting and so fun to listen to with her voice inflections and dramatization. We were so excited. The only bummer was that the tournament fell on April 7th, Maddi's Birthday. We planned to try and pack it all in anyway so we had everything ready for Maddi's bday dinner and took off for the speech tournament planning to rush back once it was over. We knew there was a possibility of Mia moving on to the next rounds which would make everything go longer, but we thought we'd worry about it when/if it happened. Well it's interesting the way things work out and poor Mia had to learn a tough lesson this night but we were so proud of her attitude in spite or how things turned out. So for the competition they give their speech in a room with a small group of kids and judges 2 different times. In the first classroom Mia was waiting her turn to go when a little girl goes up and says she will be telling "The True Story of the Three Little Pigs"! It was verbatim the exact speech Mia had prepared and this little girl had it just as well prepared as Mia. Mia's little face just fell and I could tell she was totally thrown off....none of us anticipated that happening. But she got up there anyway, to give the exact same speech and did it very well but as soon as we got out of the room she burst into tears feeling like she had messed up a few parts (I'm not sure an adult would handle that situation well!)... and Mia is definitely not a cryer! We told her not to worry that there would be another chance to perform and she calmed down and we headed off to the next classroom we were assigned to with different kids. As we walked in though...there was the SAME little girl in her class again! What are the chances??!! I just thought to myself, "well maybe Mia will get to go first this time, that will make it much more bearable"...no such luck....she had to go second...again! Such a bummer. She pulled through it though and gave a wonderful performance and then we were off to eat some food and wait for the results. I knew how badly she wanted to move on to the next rounds but as a Mom I was torn knowing her moving on would mean postponing Maddi's bday celebration. Well as it turned out, the little girl in Mia's group moved on and Mia didn't. But on the way home Mia told me that she was glad she didn't move on because she felt like Maddi's Birthday was more important! So proud of her and her good attitude in a really tough situation. And all in all it was still a really great experience getting to participate! :) Great Job Mia!
