Happy "Sad" Birthday To Lance....sometimes you just have to laugh!

We celebrated as a family on Sunday and this is where the "Sad" part of the Birthday comes in. I was planning on keeping things simple since we had had such a busy week/weekend and was going to make a little sheet cake that would make the girls excited to celebrate Daddy's Birthday. But Sunday morning I started feel creative and decided to something a little more elaborate. I looked up surfing designs on cakes and got a yummy frosting recipe to spice things up a bit. The Girls were so excited as they watched me draw a surfboard on the cake, write his name in Hawaiian style lettering, and then add some waves on along the sides of the cake. It was looking really cute and thankfully Lance had already taken a peek at it because before I could take a picture of it and 10 minutes before we had to leave for church, I lifted the pan just a bit to put one last detail on the side and the whole thing slid off the pan and landed face down on the kitchen floor! Goodbye surfboard, goodbye creative inspiration. goodbye birthday cake. As I cleaned it up the girls started commenting on how it was so sad that the cake was ruined and started saying "this is a SAD Birthday" and then proceeded to SING "Happy Sad Birthday To Daddy". Lance refused to throw it away (saying that the rest of the cake still tasted good) so we popped it in the fridge, I tried not to cry, and we headed off to church. And thankfully after a few hours of spiritual nourishment and a little perspective we all had a good laugh when we got home and YEP we still ate the cake.
It's the thought that counts right???

I can't believe it's been this long since I last posted...but here we still are! Lance and I spent his birthday this year going on a double date with our good friends and then I had given him a "Day of Surfing" as a birthday present (and Dani was nice enough to loan her husband to the cause...so he could have a buddy to surf with) and he spent half the day surfing and then we joined him on the beach for the other half. It was a fun day and I think he enjoyed himself.
