Thankfully this time although Ella got to tag along with Mommy Daddy she was not the one visiting the hopsital. Some of you may remember that right after Ella was born, I noticed a lump in my neck that kept getting bigger and painful. Because Ella was still in the NICU and we were so worried about infections I went to the doctor to get it checked out, and after blood tests, anitbiotics, refereals to different doctors and finally after an ultrasound and catscan, my ENT in Indiana decided that I would need to have a biospy done to determine if the mass in my neck was benign or not. Because we were moving in a week and the lump was actually getting smaller we decided to wait until we got to Spokane and if it didn't go away we would have things taken care of here. This was a relief to not worry about anymore on our trip out here, it continued to get smaller and wasn't bothering me anymore. Anyway about 2 weeks ago the lump started swelling again, was bigger then before and more painful, so that was motivation enough to see and ENT here (ironically at the office where Lance is doing his externship) and I was told last week after a needle biopsy that I would need to get a full biopsy. So that's what we did this past Monday. A Big thank you to all our families for the fasting and prayers. I went in Monday morning, and the surgery took about 2 hours. They just made an incision on my neck removed the masses that were infected or inflamed and took "frozen sections" (don't ask me what exactly that means) and evaluated them right there to see if there were any cancer cells. They determined that everything looked benign (YEAH!) and stitched me back up. So it was a big relief to wake up and hear the great news. They think the mass was a branchial cleft cyst (We will find out on Thursday or Friday the final verdict on that). Bascially it's leftover tissue from development (like in the womb development....crazy) that just resurfaces basically at some point in life. So after spending three days recovering so far, I can say that I would much rather have a baby then get a biopsy done! I think I slept off and on ALL day Monday. Tuesday I was more coherent which was nice but still pretty uncomfortable. Thankfully Lance was able to take Monday and Tuesday off from work and did an awesome job as Stay-At-Home-Dad. Although I think he has decided that he would never officially want that title. :) I've actually never seen him so tired (I think EVER!)
Here are some lovely pictures for the medically curious.
After the surgery they put a tube in my neck to drain fluid out and Lance got the fun job of pulling it out my neck a day later. I couldn't believe how long it actually was....I know pretty gross!

AHHHHH!!!!!!!! KAZ! How AWFUL! Even describing it on the phone I coudln't of imagined it as gruesome as this! I'm so sorry! WOW! Well I love you and glad you are (ALMOST FOR SURE) ok. We have been thinking and fasting for ya :)
MUCH MUCH LOVE!
I am so sorry. I hate having surgery. Glad to see Lance was there to such a great help!
Oh my heck I've had a crazy lump thing on my neck and they want me to do a pin prick biopsy, but like you we're moving, so we decided to wait. I wonder if it's the same thing, I had a miscarriage when we first noticed it, and it get's smaller on antibiotics. So weird?!
Wow Kathleen! I'm glad everything is okay. That sounds sort of like something my brother had on his mission. But for him, it was from his umbilical cord! One morning he woke up and there was blood all over his sheets. Weird! I glad it was nothing more.
What a relief and an answer to your prayers that everything turned out great! What a blessing! I love the graphic pictures...although I am going to be a nurse, so nothing grosses me out. :) I am glad that Lance survived boing a stay at home daddy...too funny.
OMG Kathleen! I'm glad everything turned out well!!
I am so glad that you are O.K. and it is benign! That must have been a little scary!
Holy Crap...Kathleen you need a vacation.
